Canada Unites with the Threat of Trade War
De minimis no more
New tariffs ended a loophole that let Chinese companies like Temu and Shein ship small packages to the US duty-free.
This loophole, called the de minimis exemption, saw a huge increase in these shipments with the rise of low-cost shopping apps like Temu and Shein.
The change could cost US consumers billions but might help US companies like Amazon.
The elimination of de-minimis tax-free shipments would also hurt many small businesses that ship orders directly from China.
At the moment of publication, there was a temporary delay to these new tariffs on de-minimis exempt packages.
We’ll probably see more of this seesawing of tariffs, delay tariffs back and forth for the foreseeable future.
Canada Unites with the Threat of Trade War
While the 25% tariffs on Canadian imported goods is delayed until March, the aggressive move by the current administration has galvanized the friendly-neighbours to the north to unite together and put on a strong front to find new ways to diversify trade domestically as well as with other international partners.
Canadians see the recent actions against them to “hit differently” than any other time in history by a supposed long-term partner and ally.
Prime Minister Trudeau has also been record in a recent emergency summit with Canadian business leaders that the threat of the US wanting to annex Canada (for its vast natural resources) to be the 51st state is VERY real.
US Egg Prices Continue to Soar
The continued outbreak of avian flu continues with no end in sight resulting in massive cullings of egg-laying birds in the US.
The shock to the egg supply chain is resulting in massive increases in egg prices.
The Department of Agriculture has a dire outlook too forecasting another 20% increase in prices this year.
